If you make your account the administrators account and protect it with a password, you can then set up an account with limited privileges by going to Start - Control Panel - User Accounts.
Let the kids use that account. From a limited account they can download software to the desktop but they can't install it.
So as the administrator, from your account you go to My Computer, Internet, then check the file for viruses and drag it to your account to install it - if you want it on the pc! If not, delete it.
And never let them have the password!

You can download Shoot The Messenger from grc.com, its a really good site.

Windows Messenger comes with windows. I believe you can uninstall it from the Add/Remove programs but have to go into the Windows Components part of it. You could also check with your internet provider to see if they offer any free parental control software as well to block that stuff.

Windows Messenger comes with Windows XP, it isn't downloadable, and can be disabled. But if your kids have access to the computer they can enable it again.

You may be thinking of Yahoo messenger or AIM, if you have AOL.

Without restricting your children's access to the computer, you can't stop them. You can set accounts for each of them with certain restrictions.

The FREE PROGRAM that turns OFF Messenger, is SHOOTTHEMESSENGER on a search of http://google.com

Messenger is a huge security problem in Microsoft, and there are 811 OTHER operating systems that are more secure, virus proof, and permit genuine password control of the system for multiple users. These all offer Messenger services, plus, AIM, ICQ, and others, in a single panel!

Of those 811 FREE Open Source OSes, http://pclinuxos.com is my favorite, boots in CDrom, runs in RAM disc, gives 5500 FREE games, programs...

If you insist upon using the products of multiple convicted Felon Microsoft, who just had their PROBATION REVOKED, and then, imposed for THREE MORE YEARS, then you like playing with know convicted felons! And, you don't think they will mug you again?

Depending on your operating system, but if you have Windows XP, you can give each child an user account and their own password. As Administrator, you then can set each user account to be a restricted user - which means they can't download and install any application...only the Adminstrator (you) can do this.

My view is that you allow access to your Children.
You can always check there conversations by looking at the log and if you are then concerned talk to them.
If you block it they will soon find a way to re access it and keep it secret from you.
