You will have to apply for immigration status.

You can stay in Canada up to 180 days out of 365 days without a visa, but you cannot work or do anything that requires a SIN (similar to our SSN), which includes renting, utilities, etc.

In order to settle in Canada, you have to apply for and be granted a temporary or permanent resident Visa. The process takes on average 1-3 years, and costs about $1,200 per person with all fees and expenses involved. There are also specific regulations in regards to Quebec.

Firstly, Montreal is french-speaking. A beautiful and friendly place, but not easy for Anglophones to get work.

Secondly, the Prime Minister of Canada right now is a mere puppet of the neo-con regime, so if that's what you're running from, Canada is a small step forward.

There will be an election in Canada next year. Likely the current right-wing government will be kicked out by a coallition of LIberals and NDP. By that time, conscription and civil liberties in America will be such an issue that Canada will accept Americans fleeing political persecution. That'll be the right time to make your break.

If you can't wait that long, you can legally work and live in Canada as long as you have a decent university degree. You need to take a contract, rather than a full-time job. It's part of the NAFTA agreement.

Take this advice, though: move to Vancouver.
