It's big because it's fun to play.
If you are asking why so many people watch baseball, i can't answer that question. I think it's boring to watch. Takes way to long. And their is hardly any action. I think people still follow it as much as they do because their parents started them watching it when they were little, and now they can't give it up.
I think that's the same reason why Football (Soccer) is such a big deal everywhere else in the world besides the USA and it just won't catch on there. Americans didn't grow up watching it, so we have no real ties to the game. Europeans grew up with it. Soccer is all that is on TV for sports in Europe, and Soccer news takes up half of the daily newspaper.
One more reason why Americans don't care about soccer. We have the best league in the world in 4 major sports. American football, Baseball, Basketball, and Hockey. And then there is MLS. (Minor League Soccer) If MLS started getting the best players in the world, I guarantee you americans would care about soccer.

Here's the truth. Baseball is lauded as the summer pastime. IE: the Boys of Summer, and the like. The reason baseball gets such a strong root in our youth is just that. It's something that they can be occupied with during the summer. the games take 3 hours a piece which is why it's a "pass-time" (the basis of that word by the way).
The kids can watch whichever team their home team is almost every day. When they're not in school, that's what they have to look forward to. Baseball over and over. 162 games per year. they watch their heroes day after day after month after month.

Because the Americans wouldn't be able to understand cricket - second only to chess as an intellectual game. I've watched a game of baseball and it's crap. Really a game for girls at best.
