I tried cleaning it up thinking the dust was causing the sound but the problem remained.

Since you have already cleaned the area, I'd say that the problem is a worn bearing on either the CPU fan, or the power supply fan. I've had to change several of them in the past, so I am familiar with the problem. If you are comfortable with fixing computers, it is easy and cheap to fix. Alternatively, take it to a repairer and get it fixed. These fans are usually very cheap, so don't expect a big repair bill.

It definitely needs more of a cleaning, or the bearing in the fan may be wearing out from old age (it's an older computer, yes?)

Open up the box and thoroughly clean the area carefully, being careful to unplug the computer's power supply first. Use some compressed air in a can, and a small vac designed for cleaning electronics. You'll most likely need a small, non-magnetic tweezers as well.

My guess is that you'll find pet hair in the fan unit.

If all else fails, get a new power supply for the unit.

Be shure the sound is actually from the back. There is a fan in many tower systems which is located in the front panel, this may be clogged, or bad. As far as the power supply fan, if you are shure this is where the growl is coming from, replace the supply. They are cheaper to relace than repair.

That one in back is the power supply fan, Important, but not as much so as the proccesor fan, which could cause you to lose data or just shut down the motherboard altogether. you can get replacements for either at Best buy or such. or have the geeks come and fix it for you.

Probably bad fan bearings.

When it stops making the growling noise, the PSU will overheat, destroy itself, perhaps catch on fire, usually not, then the computer dies, sometimes taking the guts with it...

Change out the PSU, they are as cheap as $10 on the net...

Better fix this before something worse happens..if its the power supply fan, that could lead to a overheated PS, and that could lead to a shorting supply, which could damage the rest of your PC when it does. Ive seen it happen numerous times...fix it now before it gets real $$.

I consistently think of of somebody taking up a schoolbus with a gadget gun, or of the college shootings in Beslan. To the common American, a terrorist is visualized as an Islamic extremist, yet terrorism is as previous as civilization. If the U.S. did no longer meddle in international affairs plenty, and did no longer help Israel as much as we do, we does no longer additionally be attentive to what an "Islamic terrorist" became. this is basic sufficient. although, i'm in my opinion misplaced on the priority. On one hand, i don't sense that we would desire to consistently be helping international places to the quantity that we help Israel, yet ofcourse, they could be wiped out if we did no longer. even however Israel became ilegally popular after WW2, does that propose that's contemporary citizens should be left to die? No. yet we can't, like this administration, pretend like we help peace yet then turn the different cheek and help Israel. as a replace of asserting, "Yeah, Israel shouldn't exist possibly, yet what can their infants do now? you could no longer kill them. Please, enable's seek for a compromise," we are saying, "ok, you and your terrorists can't be negotiated with and Israel would be right here because of the fact we mentioned so. in case you fire any missiles, your people will face sanctions. that's all." THAT breeds anger and terrorism. And until now, i became talking approximately "meddling in international affairs." properly, as somebody who helps upholding humanity, I do have faith in assisting Darfur... yet whilst extremists initiate gunning at us, it is going to be like Iraq, in basic terms on a smaller scale, the place our actual reason could have been to unlock people (a minimum of this is noble). Ah.
