fog are just clouds coming down to the ground.

mist is thicker in density, and is just tiny sprinkles of water that you can easily see through.

Mist is a very light fog and is usually nothing more than very low cloud. The fog we are experiencing is due to the evaporation of the trapped moisture in the ground due to the high pressure sitting over the UK. The high pressure holds it down. In the summer high pressure means fine weather. In the late 1940's and early 50's these fogs in the cities mixed with all of the other pollutants in the atmosphere and made a really toxic mixture which killed a lot of people. You really could not see a yard in front of you and it was tinged yellow from the sulphur given off when coal was burnt. They were called SMOGS.Thought you might be interested in that gem of information.
Have a happy Christmas.

The only difference between mist and fog is visibility [1]. This phenomenon is called fog if the visibility is one kilometre or less , Otherwise it is known as mist. Seen from a distance, mist is blueish, while haze is more brownish.

In the simplest of terms Mist actually falls leaving surfaces wet with droplets of water.
Fog has not agglomerated, reaching a point of saturation to fall out as mist or rain. Fog will leave surfaces with a film but has not formed droplets.
