who would win this fight?

I'd have to say Darth Sidious.
Gandalf's abilities have always tended to be a bit 'defensive'. Like in movie three when he rode out to offer protection to the men of Gondor he just shone some bright light at the flying mounted Dark Riders which made them back off a bit. Darth Sidious would have opened a can of force lightening on them and turned them to ash (or) would have brought down their beasts with the force and easily finnished off the riders with his lightsaber (if he felt like it). Then again he'd probably just recruit them as sith and give them lightsaber to play with.
In the Hobbit - Gandalf, Bilbo and a few dwarves crapped their pants when they got stopped by some trolls - Gandalf outwitted the trolls by making them argue with themselves and eventually get turned to stone. Sidious on the other hand would have again either (a) fried them (b) sliced them to pieces or (c) because of their weak minds, he would have made them kill each other.
In a 1 on 1 fight, I think it would go like this:
- Gandalf would have his staff ready and would be standing there looking quite impressive and using magic to make himslef even more so.
- Sidious would just be sitting down, totally unphased by Gandalf. Sidious would try to control Gandalf's mind but would be unable to do so.
- Gandalf starts glowing becoming a brilliant white...
- From Sidious's fingers lightning bolts would come forth...
- Gandalf's staff would create some king of barrier and would with some effort protect him from being burnt to ashes.
- At this point Sidious uses the force to lift an extremely large object behind Gandalf and swat him with it...
- Gandalf being no slouch and not taking to injury like a normal human would still be alive and able to fight on; however...
- Sidious propelled himself forward with a highly unlikely speed, lightsaber activated in mid air...
- Gandalf see's what's happening and just has time to grasp his staff with two hands and raise his staff high toward the oncoming attack...
- Little did Gandalf know that lightsabres can cut through just about anything (except Yuzhan Vong armour...) and Gandalf the White become Gandalf the Red.
Maybe he gets re-incarnated again but in the end his abilities are all a little bit too defensive - perhaps he could become a Jedi?

Did you not see The Two Towers? Gandalf is invincible! Darth Sidious is an old man, simply a vessel of the Dark Side, and powerless without it. If it hadn't been for Anakin's intervention in Revenge of the Sith, he'd literally be toast. If the White Wizard and Sith Lord fought each other in an apocalyptic battle of good vs. evil, all Gandalf would have to do is throw Sidious down a reactor shaft, and he'd win.

Sidious would chop Gandalf's staff in half, and zap him with lightning.
But then Gandalf would come back from the dead as Gandalf the purple, make Palpatine young again, which would freak him out...
"Now I have to buy a whole new wardrobe, my little purple friend."
While he's out doing this, Frodo drops Palpatine's lightsaber in the lava on Mustafar, and Palpatine falls over and dies.

Gandalf.Good will triumph over evil in the end and because gandalf is wiser,plus he can just wave his stick to create powers compared to darth sidious who can only fight in close combat.

sidious may have d moves,but gandalf has d magic - loads of it.d time it wud take 4 sid 2 take out his light saber,gandalf wud b done wit him.
