yes prasanna, win xp itself needs 128 mb ram to operate
so basically any addition will be a tremendous boost
> more so, since u'r processor / system is not the fastest
make it 512 mb, which is the max. u'r motherboard will support
make sure u get the right type
SDRAM SODIMM, 100MHz PC100
256 mb x 2 modules

128Mb of memory is just barely enough to open Windows XP, which requires 124 mb. It wouldn't be enough to get word to work. Although laptop memory is a bit pricy, you should add at least another 128 mb, which will give Windows some operating room and let you run Word.
Check the specs on the Sony VAIO to see what kind of memory it takes:

Well the problem with laptops is that memory for them is expensive. Your best bet would be to wipe the system clean (wipe everything off the hard drive). If that's not good enough then you can try to install more memory. If you're just going to use it for Word 128 SHOULD be ok.

It should make it perform better if you increase the available RAM, it should be able to handle bigger files then.
Also do a scan for viruses and spy-ware. I wont recommend a program as it's a personal thing, use what's best for you, better still do some research before you install anything.
I think it's just a case of opening a door on the bottom and plugging it in as long, as you have the right type and it's compatible.

Yes, it's bound to help. 128 is just about the minimum possible. Try taking your laptop on line to www.crucial.com for a free run-down on your machine and recommendations specifically for your setup.
You may also want to remove any programs you don't want, and download & run Ccleaner (crap cleaner - free) to shift a lot of dross, as well as run Disk cleanup & defrag (in All Programs - Accessories - System Tools)
By the way, if you don't already have MS Office on your laptop, try downloading Open Office, almost identical to the MS offering and free, as well as being less resource-hungry.
Hope this helps.

yes 128mb is probably the minimum memory you could be using if you are using XP. would suggest upgrading to at least 512mb preffereably 1Gb. Get as much as you can afford.
If you want to know what memory you need go to http://www.crucial.com This has a system scan that will tell you how much memory the pc can handle and what type.

Yes, you should notice a significant performance boost by adding more RAM. It is the easiest/cheapest way to upgrade your computer.
Adding at least a 128mb stick should be sufficient to use microsoft word.
