I think you have lost control of the hired help, old boy. My footman, Slipe, is busy right now, snorkelling in the lake for freshwater shrimp for Christmas morning breakfast. Later today, he's going to shoot me something festive. Not bad for a 72 year old.

Most of America will be off this day. At least he is willing to work half a day. I think that the butler should be allowed some time to spend with his friends, and family.
Also how many days do you allow your butler to be off. You stated that he has already had a day off this month. This would be mean to make him stay at your home while you are celebrating the holiday with your friends, and family.
He deserves some family festive time as well.

Of course you must give him at the very least a half day off
Cos he's coming round here to moonlight for me and then after the new year I'll offer him a job and you will have to skivvy for yourself
Go on have a miserable christmas tight @rse
By the way I'm paying him a great deal more that he gets from you
Happy new year

My butler tried the same thing on with me last year, I made him work all day, then fired him on Boxing day. After about a month of unemployment, he asked for his old job back. I agreed to re-instate him, but at greatly reduced wages and no more silly unreasonable requests for time off

Oh yes. he might also need an xmas holiday, if not a long one a short half day only. Tell him to finish off all the work early and go. This will be the gretaest gift you are giving to Jesus.

indeed!!
I would tell him he may have his time off on Boxing day--the usual couple hours is what my man has.
It is soo difficult to find good help these days. Mine even asked for a salary!
Oh the state of the monarchy!
A Madly Merry, Wickedly Happy Christmas to all!

If you don't want to give him time off, you may have to pay him extra for working over Christmas. Can't you get some cover for Christmas, so he can enjoy the holidays, too?

If you have a Butler , nothing is normal.
but if you are a smart **** , anything is normal for you .
so give him his day off mate with double pay , and let him borrow the Rolls Royce as well .
at least that is what we allow our Butler.

dude, give him the day off, YOU would want Christmas off if you were he. It's Jesus' birthday for heavens sake. Seriously, you should give him the whole day off, it is the right thing to do.
P.S. that ain't cheeky for him to ask for half day of Christmas off , it's normal for anyone to want Christmas day off.
