well my brother dropped my computer then my disc drive didnt read any discs i went to see if the driver was turned off it was for the rest of the night then this morning i tried playing a cd with no luck i tried a load of other CDs some DvDs and cd ROMS it wouldnt work the troubleshooter had no luck device manager says its fine i went on my computer and checked the properties still not working i turned the driver off and on nope if this helps im on a win xp laptop do you think its coz its been dropped i dunno please help me thanks

Might be CDROM lens have been weakened after the completion of the warranty period. Then you need to buy a new one.

If the drive just doesn't work all of a sudden, it might be because the notebook has been dropped. Something inside is probably messed up. If you have the notebook under warranty still you can call in. Don't tell them you dropped it... :)


You can have a techie look at it before you consider replacing the drive.

might be because of ur brother dropping ur PC.. it may damageed the lens of ur cd roms.. u nid to do is to return it where uve purchased it if its stills cover the warranty period then gud for u but if its not .. u better tell ur brother that he got to buy the a new cd/dvd ROM

The lens is dirty. Try buying a cleaning cd (found in electronic section of Wal-marts or music stores). You can insert into your pc and it'll clean your lens.

most likely,if the device manager sees it it means that is there but it doesn't work anymore ,try to swap it to find out,if it still not working maybe the motherboard has been damaged.

try updating the firmware if still no luck buy new dvd burner geeks.com or newegg.com have some cheap deals.

it is buggered get a new drive
or check all connections in the tower
