No, the X button is okay to use, IE7 isn't. There are a lot of problems with Internet Explorer 7, and most people aren't able to deal with it or get it to run properly. My suggestion is for you to uninstall IE7 and it will revert back to IE6. Wait a few months until Microsoft has the bugs worked out, then try again.
Click on start, settings, control panel, add/remove programs and the show updates box at the top. When the list loads, find Internet Explorer 7 and click on the right to remove it. After removal, close control panel and restart the computer. It will revert back to IE6, and I think your problem will be over.

ie 7 is very unstable on xp i installed it too and had an error
use Firefox instead its faster safer and free
