yes, i just spent half the day shopping and it's terrible there... so many people... besides, no one really thinks of Christmas, everyone only thinks of buying gifts, food and all that stuff... it becomes a nightmare instead of celebration.

Christmas is commercial. However, I think that everyone can control how Christmas is going to be celebrated in their homes.
I only buy for those people that mean a lot to me. I also cook for my family because I have three kids. I am not like everyone. I do not get involved in job Christmas exchanges, and other job related parties.
My children are told of my budget, and I tell them there is no Santa Clause. I am Santa, and Santa cannot afford everything that you want.
I tell them to pick the items that they really want, and to let there grandparents know about the other items.
If I did not have small children. I would not celebrate the day at all.

well, as Jesus wasn't even born on Xmas day and the whole Xmas tree things is nothing to do with Christianity, but the pagan worship of trees, then you can forget the religious aspects and feel no guilt about not going to church.
Ultimately it's just a two-day food-fest with a lot of commercial pressure to spend money and boost the shop's takings. I'm not a 'bah-humbug' but realistic - the plus side of Xmas is usually some fairly good movies on the box and eating Xmas pudding!

Personally I don't, but I do see where you are coming from. You just have to do your own thing. You shouldn't waste your life and your Christmas bending over backwards to suit everybody else's needs. I guess the best thing for you to do is try and arrive at a compromise. Most people will spend Christmas and Boxing Day with family - why not just say you will only spend one of the days with family, have the other to yourself or to do what you want to do?
My family have had a difficult year so it is important for us to spend it together this Christmas, but your situation may be very different to mine.

I agree. However, if you do all your shopping online, or at least get an idea of what you want on there, you can be done with the shopping in no time. The family thing is supposed to be what it's all about (unless of course you believe in the religious significance as well), & it is only once a year - it just starts too soon, that's all.

I too hate the commercialism and the feeling of having to take part in "The season to be jolly" or risk being branded a miserable old git.
Decent meal, relax, drink......sounds good but I'd rather be in the Canaries and not in this mess of a country.
I might mellow a bit now that I'm a grandfather........who knows?

Yes, it can be so draining! It's become too commercialized by the media. Christmas is supposed to be about the birth of Jesus, but all you hear about is shopping and how much the business experts expect us to spend. It's all about greed for stores unfortunately!

Christmas became special again after I had kids. Before that it was the usual visiting both sets of parents then coming home exhausted, now we cant wait for Christmas to share it with our boys. And not only to open presents but to teach them the true meaning of Christmas and why it is our most important yearly celebration. Merry Christmas to all.

Coca cola bought Santa? Who did they buy him off, who sold santa, that's what i want to know, who sold Santa!?
Yes the family thing isn't everyone's cup of tea, cup's of tea aren't everyones cup of tea, no ones forcing people to do the family thing... If you're feeling pressure it's probably your own conscience.

I had a couple years like that, but the reality of the love we all share, the greatness of the season has overcome all those things. Every Christmas is getting better and better these days.
