1. Terry Goodkind writes a pretty good series called the "Sword of Truth."
2. Another pretty decent read is by Raymond E Feist. I only read the first two books in his series, "Magician: Apprentice" and "Magician: Master." From what I read though, they were impressive.
3. Ursula LeGuin writes a series that is excellent. Go check out the "Wizard of Earthsea."

Try "The Deed of Paksenarrion" series (3 books) by Elizabeth Moon. Paksenarrion starts out as the daughter as a sheepfarmer and ends up as something MUCH more!
