The Internet is the worldwide, publicly accessible network of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching using the standard Internet Protocol (IP). It is a "network of networks" that consists of millions of smaller domestic, academic, business, and government networks, which together carry various information and services, such as electronic mail, online chat, file transfer, and the interlinked Web pages and other documents of the World Wide Web.

Internet originally came from the word "INTERnational NETwork". The original idea of internet is to connect every computers in the world through a network of communications. It is a tool for every single human beings (the ones with a computer and an internet connections, of course) to communicate with each other through the virtual networks. It is actually a bigger version of local networks like LAN when you play network games like dOTA. But it is for the world. In order to be connected, the region must have a server to connect you to other servers around the world. So, that's how we can talk and express our ideas freely without boundaries. :)
