I like a book that gets straight into the action Usually you know in the first few pages if its a fizzer or not.

I'm with you. If the first few sentences are not good it does not bode well for the rest of the book. I still keep reading, but it is very rare for the book to be better than the first paragraph....which should be the best in the book since so many people read it to see if they want the book LOL
The outline is given if you read the covers or leaves, so you know where it is going and whether you like the plot or not...but liking the book...well that's a whole nother story...pardon the pun LOL

This very much depends on whether or not you like to learn new things. Sometimes it's hard to keep on reading something that is totally different than anything you have ever heard of before. I know I have read the first few chapters of books and said to myself, "Holy crap if I didn't have to read this book for a class I would burn it" But when I was totally finished with it, I found that I at least had learned something from it. Sometimes the writer just doesnt have the talent to display his or her knowledge.

LOL. you're funny.
well for me I can tell the style of the writer within the first couple of pages and whether or not I like it, I finish it. I didn't like the catcher in the rye at all but towards the middle I was like "This book is awesome" and I had almost given up on it.
but if its a book I haven't bought or checked out yet I just skim through it and if I don't like where its headed I put it back.

I was about to say....sometimes I do judge a book by its cover, but I do it the opposite way everyone else tends to think. There are times when I'll see a book cover and just know that I MUST read it. Other than that, it's usually the first chapter or so :)

I would say it depends mostly on the book, some people end up falling in love with a book within the first chapter but other books such as The Clockwork Orange I didn’t end up liking until half way threw!

Wow the first few sentences? You'll never read any book like that. For me its the first three chapters.

About 1/2 of the first chapter, i try and give it some time, some books are slow starters.

many times you can tell if you're going to like it right away but the dislike takes longer, sometimes I don't think I'll like a book but by chapter 2 or 3 I do, so I give them a good chance and rarely do I quit.
