I believe it to be a mixture of the birth of Jesus Christ and the fact that he had wise men bring him gifts. That's how it was associated with gifts at christmas.

Don't buy the Christmas 4000 yrs ago hype. Christmas is the day agreed upon to celebrate the bith of Jesus Christ. It was chosen at the end of the year partially to symbolize the end of the pre messianic age and partially as an altrernative to pre existing pagan and jewish celebrations. It was also a possible date for His birth, some say not so b/c of wise men with the flock, but I have heard this refuted may ways by real historians. When the Church decided upon this date St. Nicloas was there after being released form a Roman prison for being a Christian. He was a defender of the divinity of Jesus Christ and a Bishop. He took toys around to the children in his parish and left them at their door steps, ect. When the protostant reformation began they no longer wanted to show reverance, b/c they feared it as idolotry, to the old saints, but St. Nicholas was such an intergal part that he soon became known as Santa Clause. Later a newspaper writer wrote the Night before Christmas and then you have what we have to day. No pagan idolotry, all the so called symbolism added was coincidental. Most modern theories to the contrary were started by neo pagans for the pourpose of converting Christians. I used to do it so I know. Some thing to concider:
St. Nicolas delivered presents to kids on the fist celebrated Christmas

If St Nicholas is a christian then he does live for ever

Is there any other christian ministry that is any larger or has helped so many underprivilaged people?

Respect Santa, he's got game

Jesus did not invent Christmas and his birthday is not the 25th of December. His birthday was April 7th and it was Jupiter in the sky that they called the Star of Bethlehem. Look it up in Science it is a proven fact. This is a man made holiday and Santa Claus was Greek and he was Nicholas or St Nick. And it is a wonderful Holiday for everyone to be humble and kind. And so what we can still celebrate Jesus birthday at least we are remembering him, I just wish people would be more humble like this all year long. And not wait for Christmas. Passover or Easter is when Christ was born and died. We should make a real big Holiday in Easter now that we know and not just have the Sunday we should get all the days of Passover for his death if we really wanted to celebrate, that he died for our sins, while during his Jewish faith he was slaughtered on his holy days of Passover.

Jesus did not invent Christ-Mass(original spelling) . Santa came from a legend in another country . that was put in place because people didn't think that young people could really understand the meaning of Christ-Mass.
Now the joke is on them as they have forgotten the real meaning of the day themselves. and use the excuse that if a baby Jesus can receive expensive gifts so should they.
Also they are reverting back to the Roman Pagan celebration of Saturnalia. And mixing in another Pagan celebration of Yule( that comes before the date of Christ-mass)the Winter solstice Dec.20-23.

Jesus did not invent Christmas. Christmas was celebrated as far back as 4000 BC. Search for Santa Claus on Yahoo! or Google.

it sounds funny when you say "Jesis invented christmas". The word "invented" is not appropriate. God sent his only begotten son and His name was Jesus, to be born of a maiden, and Jesus came to save the world..

Santa and jesus don't ever appear in the same sentence. You can find Santa Clause in Wikipedia.
