very good question. I think nobody can answer your question to your satisfaction. People may say that it's a recognition to their work and so many arguments. Now a days so many awards are given and int resting thing is that you have to apply for that, what a pity? If any institute wants to felicitate/recognise the genius they should go to him. I see that again these awards are manipulations, given with prejudice etc even at International level. There is no need for others to recognise your strengths. One should go on working and influence the people by good work not for anything in return.

It's human nature. People feel that they need to physically own something like an award, a trophy, a certificate, a crown, so that they can prove their worth on this earth. unfortunately it's just how their mind works. They don't realise that in the end none of those things matter. You can't take your trophies with you when your life is over. yes it's awesome to get a nobel prize, but isn't it more important that your accomplishment actually make a difference in this world? And even if people do get recognized, they forget to be humble. I think that's the major problem. They forget humility and all the people who got them where they are today. as for the miss universe contest, yes I think it's totally pointless. the beauty of a woman should be measured by herself when she looks in the mirror. It's a contest that I think is meant to make every other woman feel inferior because they don't look like that or do the things that those women do. So in the end I guess humans just crave recognition. Sad truth.

See, most intelligent people also 'run' to foreign countries, to get a better opportunity to get really paid for their true worth....
We have set our own standards for evaluation, does not seem to hold good in reality.... no body is interested in even disputing us.. they simply quit, leaving us to decide which ever way it suits us.. may be some of us would try to think of it, at least after some time, when we impose unrealistic rules, standards, working conditions, evaluation methods/yardsticks etc, ...
Now when there is a good recognition for 'foreign' settled Indians, then the recognition by foreigners too has to have value...
The persons with authority, chosen to 'select' come by majority votes... they choose to 'dictate' every field of human activity, whether needed or not, and so , either a person does not bother about any recognition, or seeks it elsewhere...
Incidentally, please note that majority of performers still prefer to ignore seeking recognition... Few go after these awards, knowing well, that recognition has to come from else where... We make sure that it is properly 'tAXED' when it enters here !!

A great question and there are some great answers already posted. I want to highlight just one aspect that remains to be taken into account.

Yes, ego satisfaction or mental elation or pride of being 'one up' is indeed driving people to garner awards and work for them..... but there is a more important practical reason.... the recognition through award is very often a gateway for much enhanced rewards in the future.

For example, the organised workout and training which women pay for and spend time on prior to beauty contests, is very much driven by the huge monetary rewards a beauty queen gets from roles in films that follow the winning of award. I think that is the cake and the crown is mere icing.

Human nature tells us we want to be liked. These awards are an easy way of telling us we are liked. We want everyone to love us so therefore, we want to be like everyone else. I personally believe that when a woman is strong in her self sense and knows who she is, then she is the most beautiful of us all. Insecurity has turned this country into something it should not be. We should not be so materialistic or vanity-prone. The perfect woman shoule be one with great self-esteem, NOT the skinniest, prettiest, most Barbie-like.

Intellect in women is not something to be looked for in this country and I think that is a discrace. In fact, I believe that men and women should be treated equally when they both work to have the same level of intellect. Everyone should treat others with respect regardless.

Well anyhow, sorry to rant and rave. This is something that just gets to me! People run after awards to help their self esteem. In the long run, it may not even help all that much. But I am not one to run after that kind of award, so I really dont know from experience

We run after awards and accolade for the same reason they run in various sort of rat races. Though the strange thing is that even if you win the biggest race and get the highest award, you still remain just the same rat, only with less freedom.

Freedom comes when we have more room to play in, and more peace to be in.

Human beings are gifted with a super brain. So in addition to eating (which is must to be alive), he has devised a lot of other things to keep him occupying besides creating physical comforts for him. In fact, all materialistic things are worthless as we have to leave them when we go to heavens. How may of us know even the name of our great grandparents? So our achievements are known only upto a few hundred years only. After that it has only academic value!

Because people want to be better than people.
Best film, Best food, best actor, best poem, best this or that.

I guess it makes them feel good about themselves.
