Florida Coach Urban Meyer said about a week before USC lost that if Michigan went to the National Championship game against Ohio State that the University presidents needed to get together immediately in December or January and change the BCS system to a play-off (a hypocritical comment considering this is exactly how Florida won the National Championship in 1996).
Meyer wanted to change the rules of the game in the middle of the game because he didn't like the outcome and his team, Florida, was not going to be selected in the National Championship game because, under the current rules, it probably did not measure up to Michigan. This is tantamount to not liking the end result of a football game and declaring that the person with the lowest score should actually win. It is unfair to everyone that prepares under a set of rules and wins under those set of rules to change them in the middle when one side doesn't like the rules anymore because they are not successful under them. If the rules do need changing, then you change them after the competition is completed, and then start again with new rules so everyone can compete fairly under them. Meyer revealed more about himself and the integrity of Florida football by whining about the current state of the rules and by claiming they should be changed in the middle of competition. However, once again the "idiot-factor" comes into play. Meyer's self-cheerleading and inappropriate suggestions simply steered the sheep further into spin-cycle without any critical thought about what he was proposing, and what it says about his character or the merit of his team.
Look for a moment on the other side of things. Michigan's coach Lloyd Carr has not said a detrimental word about Florida, about changing the BCS rules midstream, or even about why Michigan deserves to go to the championship game and should be considered a better candidate that Florida. Why? Because Michigan is humble, Michigan has always believed that if you put in the hard work and if you are a leader and the best, then you will be recognized for that and rewarded.

I see similarities but you are just a little off base with your accusations. For one thing Urban Meyers wasn't coaching Florida then. But one thing that does make a world of difference is that Ohio State and Michigan are in the same conference and Florida and Florida State are in two different conferences, (ACC and SEC). They each won their conference even though Florida lost in the regular season. Since Michigan and Ohio State cannot win the same conference there is no rematch in the title game. By the way, in case you didn't know, Ohio State has never beaten an SEC team in a bowl game. Seven tries and seven losses. I'm looking forward to seeing them go 0 for 8. I am an LSU fan but I will pull for all 9 teams representing the SEC this year.

Different era of football, now the BCS is focused on filling stadiums instead of letting the best teams play. FSU/UF were the best teams in 1996, and UF is the best team today. Michigan and OSU play in a conference that is weaker than the PAC-10 (which is very weak and overrated). The only reason OSU and Michigan get bowl bids and bloated pre-season rankings is their fans have lived under rocks for the last 20 years while Florida football or the SEC has dominated. The national championship was already played - UF beat Arkansas and the best Heisman candidate this year or next is Darren McFadden. Notice how five minutes after 'fat-boy' Troy Smith was handed the Heisman they were talking about 2007? It's because this is just a ploy to bring the Big-10 fans back to college football.
The weakest link on the UF football team is Urban, but he saw what was about to happen. As for his comments about Utah, that's just silly.

Urban Meyer has one obvious goal, promoting his team to greatness and prominence. To do this, he has shown that he will use whatever methods nesecarry, even contradicting his earlier statements. I don't think he's a hypocrite, because he always has the same message "Do whats best for Florida."
But is this really that bad? afterall, his job is to take care of his team, and he's obviously done this very well, regardless how annoying he's doing it.

Good point. Yeah he has 'foot in mouth syndrome'. A lot of folks get that when a camera is in their face and they think their s#!% don't stink.
This situation cries "play-off"! Take the top 4 teams, that's only two extra games. And they can keep their beloved BCS computer crap. Teams will battle to be in the top 4, not top 2.
#1 vs #4. #2 vs #3. On New Years the winners play. I'm telling you it would work. A lot of #3 teams would have no reason to complain.

They had a shot and they LOST. They had a chance and THEY BLEW IT. They were given an opportunity and they LET IT SLIP AWAY. Can you see where I'm going with this? Michigan played Ohio State and they didn't win. If they had won, they'd be playing for the national championship. I wish they had won, because I'm tired of hearing Wolverine fans whine about it. They'll have another chance next year. get on with your life.
No, I really don't care about Urban Meyers, Michigan, Ohio State, or Florida. What I said was Michigan lost, and their fans should just accept it and move on.

I do, a section in ESPN the mag showed all his major media quotes. Before Mich-Ohio State played and it looked like he was gonna lose out he was quoted as saying "The more I think about it, I think we take the top eight go play a mini tournament and see who wins" Then all the sudden the very day after Ohio State barely beat Michigan, "A rematch would be unfair to Ohio State and the country....Michigan had their chance" All the sudden a playoff isnt so fair to him is it?? Kudos to Lloyd Carr for taking the high road and refusing to give in to the dirty politics of the BCS, even though it might have cost them a national championship shot, hes teaching his players the right way to be a real man, not a dirty flip-flopping politician.
To the guy below me, Awfully funny you say that cause Whining is exactly what Urban Meyer was doing before he found out the BCS was gonna work for him, but now we are so horrible for saying the exact same things he did a month ago? I'm pretty sure you just proved my point and the point of the guy asking the question. Out of your own mouth Urban Meyer is a Hipocrite. Thanks SO much for helping to prove me right!!

Boo-Hoo-Hoo. Man don't you Michigan fans ever get tired of whining. Come on get a life. So it didn't work for Michigan. Hey ALL Coaches should be promoting their team. I don't care WHAT happened at that College BEFORE THAT COACH GOT THERE. Whining about Meyers, who wasn't at Florida at that time, is just getting silly.

man,..just say you dont like Florida and leave it at that. This "moralizing" to make a point is silly. Michigan had its shot and lost as did OSU's other opponents. Just deal with it and enjoy YOUR teams bowl game.
