It's not like people are pounding down your door offering to "help."

And if they are talking psychiatric help, well that is just another scheme to make doctors rich, isn't it?

So what exactly do people mean when they say "get help?"

"I don't want to deal with you, so find someone who will - and good luck" seems to be the rough translation.

They mean " two heads are better than one" and you're just using one trying to figure it out by yourself and you're stuck in your thinking. Get a fresh perspective.
If you ask a house painter to help you with your plumbing , he looks at your sink and says " I think you need to get some help" In general he's not blowing you off, he's saying " I'd help you but my expertise is in painting, this plumbing job is beyond me and you. Together were stuck . We need a new perspective with some expertise in the subject I think you need to call in a plumber !" And yeah, some people are blowing you off, they can't be bothered. But the same words from 2 different people, don't necessarily come from the same place ( the heart, the head)
A doctor won't fix you either, but the right one will help you to fix yourself.
Support groups can help you get a different perspective and don't charge anything, so no , they're not in it for the money.

Actually psychiatrists and therapists can help. And sometimes that's what people mean when they say get help. They want you to see someone who's experienced in the area that you need help in and can give you advice or assist you in dealing with whatever problems you're facing.

No.It means I do not have the expertise to help you and I don't want to make matters worse by offering some dumb advice. I therefore suggest you get help from somebody qualified to do it.That is my definition of "get help."

Your last line says it all man. People want to sound interested but only when they have time for you. I'm gonna put it to you this way; buck up and be a man and make $hit happen for yourself because nobody else is gonna do it for you. Make that $hit happen for you, make a ***** name for yourself man!!!! People only care when there is something in it for them.

They might be saying: 'I don't know what's wrong with you, but I can smell your life from a mile off, so sort yourself out - keeping as much distance as possible, thankyouverymuch.'

Or: 'Don't be so bloody arrogant, go&check it out with someone who might know better!'

Or, simply: 'Your a*se/house/hair has caught fire, do yourself a favour&call the fire brigade!'
