I like the suggestions here, but I have a different one. Try this:
Create a web site about a topic of interest to you, or seek out others who have web sites about topics of interest to you, and cultivate a friendship based around that particular topic. If you get enough people togeher, you might even be able to start your own Yahoo! Group for all of the interested people in the particular topic.
Also, seek out people who have websites related to topics which interest you. Most people are very willing to communicate about their own interests, especially if yours are the same as theirs.

Go to chat rooms and just jump into the conversation if you can grasp what they are talking about. Act yourself and not like some idiot. Or you can join Myspace, Friendster, Hi5, or one of the many online communities and you have a sure way to get friends online.

A good chat room or if you have any hobbies, join clubs. Even Yahoogroups is a great way to make friends too!
