Fischer, at his best, was the best ever... but once his genius/madness took him over, Kasparov would have one, though not necessarily easily.

The two are really incomparable at the most basic level... Fischer was certainly the less mentally stable, and probably the greater genius... but the two tend to counter one another. And Kasparov was brilliant... and much more stable... but not the genius Fischer was...

So its tough to gauge who was better.

Just my .01

From what I understand if they were to play today Kasparov would win because he still devotes the time to studying openings and such. He had to change his game to beat Deep Blue which Fischer has never played. Fischer doesn't like opening theory so he would be at a disadvantage against Kasparov.

Kasparov

If we assume that both players meet at the heights of their powers, I would pick Bobby as the winner. I think that what Bobby did in the interzonals on the way to his world championship was the greatest achievement. He single handedly beat the Soviet chess machine. Over the board he had the killer instinct and knew when to pounce.
Kasparov had trainers and seconds and much assistance on his journey to the top.
Both players are obviously great.

In 1972? Fischer. In 1997? Kasparov. In 1992, Fischer played against Spassky in Sveti Stefan a match, and experts calculed a rating to him around 2600-2650; so, Kasparov would win. I think that if ALL ex-world champions meet one another in a tournament, BOTVINNIK would win.
