I was at Pep Boys the other day and bought several things. The person at the cash register said the total out loud to me and I was surprised it seemed less than I had expected. I said so and the cashier just responded with a dismissive gesture. I went through the receipt and realised she hadn't charged me $10 for one of the items. When I pointed it out to her, she took the item to the back of the store to verify the price as it did not have a price tag. I realised that she had knowingly given the item to me for free to save herself a trip to verify the price in the absence of an attached price tag.

I insisted I wanted to pay for it and indeed I did, but was appalled at the cashier's lack of work ethics. I told her, "Ma'm your conscience should prick you - mine did to me.

What would you have done in a similar situation?

If I'm being brutally honest, I would not have done what you did.
Nonetheless, I salute your public-spirited behaviour.
In this day and age, where people only care about what they can get from others, you are the exception to the rule.

Yes I would and have done the same thing in the same situation. Never use someones laziness as an excuse for not doing the right thing.....nothing disturbs me more than poor a work ethic.

Absolutely, YES! What you did was the right thing. If only all people displayed the same sense of honesty and fairness when dealing with others' property, there would be very little crime in this world. And by property, i mean not only goods and services, but also one's body and mind.

I would have probably left figuring the mistake was mine. If she was too lazy to check it after being told she made a mistake...it would have been her problem.SCORE!!!

Someone else would have turned her in and she'd have lost her job. You handled it appropriately considering this fact.
