To do any activity, we need energy which is supplied to vital organs in our body by the blood(it can be in the form of glucose, for example).

When we eat food, it enters the various organs of the alimentary canal for digestion and later absorption in the ileum. For this to occur, blood is needed in order to not only supply energy for digestion but also carry the digested food away.

For this to occur, more blood is supplied to the alimentary canal than the other organs. Therefore, less energy is supplied to them resulting in fatigue/ feeling tired.

There you go. Hope this helped you:)

Erm... This has nothing got to do with whether you eat something healthy or not.

When we have consumed our food, it goes through the digestive system. The amount of blood in our body is about 5 litres. So, to digest food, we need to pump our blood more to those area. When there is more blood pumped to the digestive system, less blood is pumped to other parts of the body. So, you feel tired.

I do not think there is a release of special hormones that you make you feel tired after eating.

Well, as you have said, if you eat vegetables and meat, rich in carbohydrates and proteins (and fats as well depending upon your diet), then a sort of 'siesta response' takes place and the blood rushes to the aid of your stomach, leaving your brain and the rest of your body in a state of lassitude. Also, certain foods, especially those rich in stach, supplement a neurotransmitter called serotonin. Serotonin subdues the electrical transmission between neurons and can induce sleep. That is why we feel less attentive after a starchy meal. Tryptophan is the active ingredient in food from which the brain synthesizes serotonin. This amino acid is particularly plentiful in meat and dairy products.

Digestion requires a lot of energy. Different foods take different enzymes and energy to digest. If you just eat vegetables, you won't be as tired. If you eat starches, you'll be very tired.

Turkey contains tryptophan (sp?) which relaxes you. It's why everyone wants a nap after Thanksgiving ;-)
