I recently bought a '96 Merc C200 on the net, and its on ship transport as i write, but im worried by a rust that seems to cover the engine cover that i took note of when i viewed it on the cars website, the dealer said its just dirt, what can cause such on an engine cover, should i be worried?

Severe rusting of the bonnet / engine would normally be cause by paint damage from wind. Major reason is cheap car covers.

The other majoy cause would be an engine fire at some time that damaged the paint and now the paint is separating from the metal.

Maybe it's just dirt.

more than likely not rust. Most parts will be aluminum or plastic. I personally wouldnt worry about it. Just give it a good tune up and oil change when you take posession of it.
