It was a old configuration used in MS-DOS (I'm not sure of the exact story) and there are a few other ones you cant use such as com1, lpt1, and com2.

con, LPT1, COM1, etc are OLD Ms-Dos things, that shouldn't exist anymore in XP or Vista to say. BUT, there is a way :)

How to create a folder or file named CON , LPT1 , COM1 etc:

STEP1: goto command prompt

STEP2: type in prompt e:\> "mkdir \\.\\e:\con"

STEP3: verify by typing "dir \\.\\e:\con"

STEP4: delete the file or folder "rmdir \\.\\e:\con"

Replace the e: with the drive letter and/or path that you want to use.

it's because Microsoft has a bug or intentionally created this 'bug' in their Microsoft windows (all versions). Practically you can’t name it 'con' whatever you try to do. For the more advanced users 'con' is reserved for a function from the ancient Dos, Console. For example 'copy con test.txt' entered in dos will leave the cursor blinking and that’s it.

CON: isn't a command in DOS, it's the name of a device, like AUX:, LPT1:, COM1: and so forth.
