I've been smoking since I was 14 so about 20 years now, I'm a pretty heavy smoker. Also a pretty bad asthmatic, yes I know how stupid I am for smoking! Anyways, I've tried everything I can think of.........cold turkey, nicotine patch, nicotine gum, zyban, and most recently hypnosis. Nothing has worked! I'm a prisoner to these cigarettes and I don't know how to stop and be done with them forever!!! If there is something out there that has worked for even the most seemingly hopeless PLEASE let me know!!

The hypnosis can have it's value if it's to reprogram the right thinking....

It comes down to this: There is a finite period of time of physical addiction. Difficult as hell, yes, but it's really not a long period of time.

The real villian is not the physical addiction so much as the emotional/psychological addiction.

Pick a target date. Commit to it COMPLETELY. On that date, that's it. You don't become an ex-smoker, but take on the mentality of being a NON-SMOKER. Constantly remind yourself why it's a wretched habit. Strongly use negative affirmative language toward it. 'It smells like S***.' 'It's a foolish waste of money.' ' I am compromising my own health, and paying to do it.'

AVOID environments that you would normally light up until you gain your footing. Sit non-smoking. Go for a short stroll rather than light up during breaks. Create new rituals to replace the ones that existed around smoking.

an addiction is mostly a mental thing sometimes you have to fool your mind into believing it is real for it to work. i have been a smoker for 22 years i still smoke i have no desire to quit just yet but what i am trying to say is if you try to remember when you started to smoke you probably did not like it and for what ever reason you tricked your mind into believing that you did. if you can try to do the same thing in reverse. also it takes 7 day to create a habit it will take just as long to break one.

I am a nonsmoker and it is difficult for me to understand how a smoker can be so addicted. I mean, is the relief you get from a cigarette actually more important to you than life itself? Perhaps nicotine distorts your priorities? I read that the withdrawl symptoms go away after three weeks, so the next time you put out a cigarette, you just have to say that is my last cigarette ever, and from this moment on, I am a non-smoker. Just do it, and don't wimp out when you get the urge to light another cigarette.

Edit: Thumbs down? I was trying to help, ahole. Now I could not care less if you can't stop smoking.

I quit using the Nicotrol inhaler. It's great if you want to still be doing the motions.

I only smoked for 9 years though.
