There are several strategies that will work: Communicate that you respect the attitude that cheating cannot be permitted, but would like to prove, for the record, that you had no knowledge of it, and did not collaborate in it, to each person you speak to, below. Be respectful, and do not blame the instructor.
(1) Talk to an advisor, and request help with this.
(2) Go to the teacher, and offer to retake the test. Request that you never sit anywhere near this student again. Also, ask if he or she drops the lowest test, because then, you may not need to make it up for credit, but still make it up to prove that you are not the one who cheated.
(3) Repeat Step (1), with the dean. Have a parent call, as well, if you are not successful, especially in a smaller college.
(4) Do excellent work on every other assignment. Teachers look and change their minds about things, whether or not they actually tell you.
(5) In graded assignments, as well as in questions, go beyond the scope of the course, and be more detailed than required, to show that you really understand the material.
(6) Never bring a cell phone to class during an examination. Teachers view them as ways to cheat. This helps to keep you above suspicion in the future.
(7) Tell the young man how annoyed you are. You may want to bring a couple of friends if you are not comfortable going alone, just to verify what you said, but choose people who are discreet and will not blab things unnecessarily, so that he feels he can make it right without getting into more trouble later on just for trying to do the right thing now. Just be straightforward, and not mean about it, but firm. Maybe he will admit what he did, since he has a zero anyway, and clear your name. As a teacher, I have had students come to me, where one confessed to cheating, so that the other did not get into trouble, in a case similar to yours. I was happy to clear the name of the innocent party. (However, I did not know in advance which student had copied, or if there was collusion involved.)

Well really, if you got a 0 due to cheating then your grade is now based on behavior and not on what you learned. Is your teacher giving you a grade based on how you behaved or what you learned?
Because you did the work yourself perhaps there could be a different consequence for you letting the kid copy.
Talk to your parents. If you present it to the teacher this way then it is difficult to argue. I mean, I am sure that his policy states that cheaters will receive a 0. If he decides to stick with that then you will have to take the 0; and we could say that you probably learned not to cheat.
But the grade only shows that you learned not to cheat; it does not show what you learned in science at all.

Ask the teacher to give you a verbal test after school to allow your grade to stay the same. You can not help if someone cheats off you and you don't know about it. If you knew he was doing it though you need to take the consequenses to your actions because then you are just as much at fault as he is. If you didn't know and the teacher refuses to give you a verbal test after school then get your parents involved. Be ready though for an immediate verbal test because he will not allow you an extra day of study time if he allows it at all.

Did you let him get the answers from you, if not then I would tell your teacher and also tell your parents they might be able to help you out with trying to convince your teacher that you didnt let him have the answers and he just cheated off you paper without you letting him. Thats a hard situation good luck and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year too!

if you didn't let him do it on purpose, go up the chain of command, teachers are subject to disciplinary action as well. just because they make a decision, it isn't set in gold. many will say "if you let someone cheat you're just as guilty", but thats BS. its their fault for having the class room so over crowded you can't space out, and its the teachers fault because he didn't pay attention and see him cheating, its his class room!
and what idiot copies every single answer.

I think that you should tell the teacher or principle that the student cheated off of you and you shouldn't freak over something that small because it could be worse, it's not ur fault so don't stress over it!!!

Honestly, teachers suck! One year there was this kid who kept cheating off me and he was also correcting answers he got wrong. I told the teacher several times but guess what, she didn't do anything. AHHHHH! Some teachers i hate so much but some of them have been great friends!
