my grandmother has this car and it is amazing. coming from a family that only ever had mercedes, i should know. i personally would prefer the sl 500 but if you want a 4 door sedan then definitely go for the E-500. it is totally worth all the money you will ever spend on a car. smooth, quiet, and purrs like a tiger.

It is one of the best cars you can get your hands on. It is not as fast as the other companies, but there is no doubt that the handling, braking, steering, efficiency, and service are unsurpassed. I have a 2004 E-500 4matic. it has 27000 miles on it and still runs like new. It is worth buying used. One thing about German cars- No one wants to buy them used, so they will be a lot less expensive than they should be. Don't trust the kbb, because they don't see the car for what it is worth. they just calculate the decrease in demand and "decrease in quality".
You will have tons of fun with this car. I reached 125 mph on it once. The handling is definetely the best. The only disadvantage are that the tires need to be replaced quite a bit. So do the brakes, but it is not so bad. If you can afford an E-500, you can pay to replace the parts with the genuine originals.
A suggestion, get 4matic with it. it doesn't slow it down, and doesn't cost too much. in case you don't know, 4 matic is all time 4 wheel drive. It will be undefeatable on light off road, snow, and other bad weather. Mileage is also excellent on this car. you can also get it loaded with features.
Also, don't go cheap on it by going to "the car shop down the road". That will increase the frequency of maintanence. Give your car the best, and it will give you the best. Also, with all the new technology in this car, only the dealership will know exactly how to fix it properly.

Check http://www.kellybluebook.com or http://www.nada.com for the value based on miles, condition and location.
But the new style E Class are great cars.
Just be prepared, they are not cheap to maintain through a dealership. So shop around for a reliable private shop. Here are some great Mercedes forums online that can help you also listed in my order of preference:
