They say they're encrypted, but can someone, like a neighbor, decipher the signals somehow and see personal data? Or is the signal too far for the neighbor?

Wireless keyboards and mice don't send any personal data to your computer -- only information about clicks and key presses.

There are hardware "key loggers" that can be physically plugged into your comptuer which will record keystokres, but I don't see how that would work with wireless. I suppose it's technically feasible, but the bluetooth or infrared signal will not be strong enough. Maybe if this "wireless key logger" (which to my knowledge does not even exist) was right next to your wireless keyboard/mouse, but you'd certainly notice it.

At any rate, if you're just concerned about neighbors, don't worry about it.

My Microsoft-brand wireless keyboard's box boasted a range of 6', but in reality is more like 1'. While a wall wouldn't necessarily stop a wireless signal, chances are your neighbor is too far away to get a good signal.

I don't know much about the encryption factor, but I can tell you plainly, it's simply not very plausible from a logistics standpoint.

Wireless mice/keyboards would only send mouse movement and clicks and key presses. So they are not inherently insecure.

Your average monitor, however, does project EM radiation that can be picked up a ways away. This is much less secure (the big hacker mags have had articles on this). Wireless networking is also fairly easy to pick up and decrypt unless you are using a decent encryption key.

take you keyboard in your hand,
walk away from the desk,
see how far the signal goes.

if you are worried,
tinfoil blocks the signal,
make a little sheild around the pc.

I have never heard of anyone picking up on one.

you're good, they're about up to 5 feet radius. unless you are a hobo in a box, you should be safe from your neighbors.
