the clan was in a way a burden to Sasuke although a little drastically done, he murdered everyone to make sure that no one will stand in Sasuke's way

I agree to your opinion and I also think Itachi killed the clan because he thought that the clan was inferior to him and Sasuke. Itachi is under the impression that the more hate a person has, the stronger they will be. He thought by keeping Sasuke alive that the hate that Sasuke would sustain in his heart from Itachi killing the whole clan, would make Sasuke a strong enough opponent to be Itachi's only true challenge.

OK i think that Iatchi was pissed off about the fact that his dad thinks less of Sasuke and expects him to be just like Itachi if not better.And it wont help that every one is putting perisher on Itachi to be the clan leader and the best ninja.If i was Itachi i would have gone mid evil on ther asses to.....But that's just me..And i think that Itachi left Sasuke alive because deep down he wants to die because of what he did.
Or he just wanted sasuke to be a lonly prick.

Itachi kill his clan to test his ability. He also wants Sasuke to achieve the Mangekyou Sharingan.

Well, I know for sure that to gain Mangekyo (sp?) Sharingan, you'll have to kill your best friend. So Itachi killed Shisui (Itachi's best friend) and made it look like suicide in order to gain that. I don't believe Itachi killed the clan to make Sasuke stronger. In the anime, he explained that it was because he was testing his power. Honestly, who would kill their entire clan just to make their sibling stronger?

Ummm...I actually don't agree with you, mainly why would he kill his whole family and join Akatsuki, and why would he beat him up *episode 84*? And his family wouldn't stand in Sasuke's why they wanted him to be strong like Itachi! Sorry if I don't make any sense I can't put my thoughts out the way I wish...

He did it to acheive the Mangekyou Sharingan. Why he left Sasuke alive is the real question. There's proof about the mangekyou T_T
