This may be due to the fact that much of the SP2 installation is done during the shutdownn process.

Does it just sit idle at the shutdow screen or is the hard disk showing constant activity (can you hear it working) ?

It may also be that there was some file corruption in the process.

Please try using the Windows "System Restore" tool to bring it back to a state prior to the SP2 installation attempt.

I would then try the update again but this time wait as long as possible during the initial shutdown process.

You got to have patience with your XP SP 2 pack. One when the windows downloads updates it takes time for it to install while you are shutting down and hence it is not advisable to shut down your PC manually. Second your processor must be below 2.4 ghz. Third reason you might still be using low memory or ram. Have at least 256 MB ram.

I have found that the most common fix to thsi is your drivers are out of date for your motherboard or the copy of windows xp is corrupt. ways to fix this are registry mechanic and updating your drivers on your system. This is a very common issue with older style hardware. maybe my guess is service pack 2 just exstrapulated a current issue.

best of luck

or, to fix it completely, run linux instead. No problems with SP 2's or nothing. Fedora and DSL are good distros to look up on.

If you want to speed up your shut down, follow these instructions:

Start
Run
type prefetch

delete all those files. . . .
