Scientifically speaking, dreams are just random eletrical bursts withn the brain that occur every so often during REM sleep.

Other people think that dreams are spiritual experiences tht can show you future events, allow communication with dead people, etc.

we dream because that is the way that the brain organizes the events of the day. We dream so that the brain can assimilate the daily processes and either store or disregard the days events. It is also a tool of communication between the consious and the unconsious thoughts. Some people beleive that it tells them of the future or shows them things that they need to change to percieve harmony in their lives.
Basically dreams are there to help the brain cope with the events of life, but is also a inside look behind the veil of the "otherworld". Hope that that helps.

There is no scientific reason as to why we dream. I think that many believe today that the purpose of dreams is to process all of the unneeded emotional issues and by that method somehow "vent" some of the energy connected with negative emotions by giving "expression" to them in a socially acceptable way. This is kind of like letting the pressure off of a steam cooker before it gets dangerous.

We all choose to believe different answers. You might want to read some of Carl Jung's findings (i think it was him). . . there is a book that was based on a scientific experiment that questioned whether dreams are a mixture of memories and ideas, or if they are something more. . . Might be an interesting read. . .

I've often thought about this question, and for the life of me I can't find any good reason for it. It just seems like the brain takes thoughts and experiences from the past week or so and just mixes them together into some strange soup. No real benefit that I can see.

we dream when we're too tired or too stressed and we go to sleep. our brain cells need some getaway from the real world at times.

also, perhaps we've been wanting something so badly and we're not able to get it in real life. hence only when we're sleeping and our minds are not in control, our brain cells can play the version of our desires for momentary satisfaction.
