The whole point is to show off your new house, and milk friends for gifts. It is a completely self-centered affair, and should only be done if you are a newly-wed couple in a first home together, or if it is the first home you've ever bought. Personally, I think it's right up there with throwing yourself a baby or bridal shower...

A housewarming party is usually held when you move into a new home. Gifts from guests can be anything from a bottle of wine to an electric can opener or a lovely candle set. The amount of gifts you receive should not be the foremost thought but having friends and family together to help you celebrate your new abode is the most important!

Okay a housewarming party is a party where ur friends and family i guess u can say 'bless' u into ur new home... it's a celebration... and the gifts are all for ur home... appliances, furniture, gift cards, house plants.... stuff like that.

The idea is to have friends over to see your new place. You show 'em around a bit, and then offer some tasty bites and wine!
Yes, you should expect gifts. Most people will bring them.
