joint (n.)
c.1290, "a part of a body where two bones meet and move in contact with one another," from O.Fr. joint, from L. junctus, pp. of jungere "join" (see join). Slang meaning of "place, building, establishment" (esp. one where persons meet for shady activities) first recorded 1877, Amer.Eng., from an earlier Anglo-Irish sense (1821), perhaps on the notion of a side-room, one "joined" to a main room. The original U.S. sense was especially of "an opium-smoking den." Meaning "marijuana cigarette" (1938) is perhaps from notion of something often smoked in common, but there are other possibilities; earlier joint in drug slang meant "hypodermic outfit" (1935). Meaning "prison" is from 1953.

According to Cecil Adams (who published a newspaper column called 'the Straight Dope') (though 'Dope' meant 'facts' more than anything drug related)
In the March 12, 1938 issue of the New Yorker, Meyer Berger begins a story about a dope-smoking party with the words "It took weeks of dickering to get intoa marijuana party, because I am not a viper, which is the Harlem word for a marijuana smoker". In this article he references the words 'joint', 'roach' and 'the Man'. He also says that in the 1890s 'joint' was used for describing opium parlours.

Because that is where you go if you are caught in possession of one. Joint is slang for jail or prison.

POT is for
Prats
or
T@ssers.
And can help some with certain medical conditions.
It is called a "joint" because it is where the boneheads join in the fun. Unless physically ill and in need.
