One needs to pay something if not cash then in other kind.There is always some risk in using free download sites which might land you in trouble in future.Most of the times these FREE sites are ILLEGAL.

I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH LIME WIRE. PEOPLE SAY IT HAS BEEN KNOWN TO CARRY VIRUSES BUT "KNOCK ON WOOD" I HAVE HAD IT ABOUT A YEAR AND IT WORKS GREAT! NO PROBLEMS HERE! PLUS I HAVE THE AVG FOR FREE VIRUS SCAN.
