I was going through my computer and earasing things that I thought I didn't need. I earased something important and even though I can use my computer, it's a little messed up. I know there's a way of setting my computer to the way it was before the date that I messed it up. How do I do this?

People here will say the Windows System Restore... but that will not work because it it useless...
If you deleted something recently, stop using the computer right now and restore deleted files using a file recovery program. For this you need another hard drive or a USB pen drive where you can restore those files to.

Windows does not keep a "picture" of the current state of the computer including files and everything so you can go back whenever you want.
This is only possible if you have volume shadowing copy set up, but is not something the average user knows how to use...

I answered a file recovery question a few days ago... just do a search... i suggested a free open source program that you can use.

Good luck

You can restore the system back to an earlier working date using the 'System Restore' feature of Windows XP. The instructions are as follows :

1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.

2. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.

3. On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system checkpoint in the On this list, click a restore point list, and then click Next. A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.

You can also refer to the following Microsoft Website, which explains the same with screenshots:

The one you are talking about is called system restore but it does not bring back the deleted files, its only for restoring back the the settings you have had earlier on a particular date.

What you need is this
