Probably the Honda Civic would be the best choice of the 4. Great gas mileage (I'm averaging 35 MPG), fairly good styling (2006 Civic Si), and the price ranges are very good.

97 Outback = too old.
06 Suby STI = great looks but about 21mpg
05 Civic = looks OK and 27mpg'ish
98 Durango = too old.
Mileage, the civic wins hands down. Looks, the sti wins. You should also consider what you're doing in life at the moment. Do you go to school? Work full time? Or both? I go to school and i dont work. I purchased a WRX. My logs on gas mileage have been between 19-23mpg. (23mpg on trips). Though gas does cost a few more bucks, its no big deal, just dont buy those supersized fries and go for regular and youre set. Professionally for work and for play, the STI is the one. The price difference between the cars that you listed are pretty drastic, so that'll come into play too.
The sti's looks greatly supercede the civic, the little extra on gas is worth it.

Never had any of the others but I know Honda's are great. We had an accord since 1998 and still runs great. Besides, I think the outback is an SUV and the durango also and those things eat up gas like no other. Best bet is the civic, plus the new ones look HOT!

The Durango for looks (I have one) but mileage is about 15. The Honda would be the best mileage car with upper 20's to 30's.

I would go with the Subaru WRX, it's my dream car but I don't want to get back into car payments right now. The civic is also known to be a good vehicle but it's not fast... your choice. I think you're comparing apples and oranges by comaring vehicles that are 9-10 years old to vehicles that are 1-2 years old.

I have a Honda Civic and I love it. It gets great mileage (mines a manual). It's a 1999 and I am the original owner...it would be my choice.

if fuel mileage is the only thing your looking for, then yes the civic would be best, smallest and lightest, which equals small engine.small engines dont produce much power and therefore dont use much fuel ( a small engine is fine for a small car because it doesnt need to produce as much power since there isnt as much weight to move )
