Stewart is a recurring character in the Green Lantern mythos, usually serving as Earth's most prominent Green Lantern during the times when other notable Earth Green Lanterns, such as Hal Jordan or Kyle Rayner are absent, on leave, or retired. While initially not as popular as other human Green Lanterns in comic books, he has gained prominence in the past few years due to being featured prominently in the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited television series.

After Jordan gave up being Green Lantern in the 1980s, the Guardians selected Stewart for full time duty.

The African American Green Lantern (John Stewart) was introduced way back in the 1970's as the previous posters have given you the links. The Guardians of the Universe wanted to have backups for their primary ring wielders, and Guy Gardner was seriously injured, so John Stewart was selected.

Over the years the original GL (Hal Jordan) often disagreed with the Guardians and their policies which were kind of similar to Star Trek's prime directive- he even quit for awhile, during which times Guy and John kind of alternated as Green Lantern for the Earth sector. At this point, all three of them are active members of the Green Lantern Corps (in the comics).

During the death of Superman saga, Hal Jordan's home of Coast City was destroyed and Hal went psycho, succumbing to the dark side. He became a villian known as Parallax for a few years and defeated the entire GL corps before coming back around to being one of the good guys.

When the Justice League animated series was created, the producers decided to go with ex-marine John Stewart as their Green Lantern instead of Hal, whose straight-arrow personality was too much like Superman, or Kyle whose rash, youthful personality was too similar to the Flash.

But long story short- he's not a new character, he's been around for some time...

There are many Green Lanterns as many as 7200 and growing. but let's go back to the beginning, During the golden age Alan Scott was the "Original Green Lantern" while during the sliver age the Green Lantern was revamped for a more modern audience. this Green Lantern was test pilot Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern you are probably referring to is John Stewart who started off as an alternate GL of sector 2814, and during the rebuilding of the corps also is Green lantern of sector 2814 in conjunction with Hal

If you mean Hal Jordan he retired and there was another anglo GL before this one i think the original will come back at some point they can all be apart of the Green alntern Corps at the same time I think

Every woman's has her own beauty most of us, it may come from with in. I think all happy women big, little, black are white or any race are beautiful people. You must find your own happiness, others can-not do that for you. Looks help ,but most people love you, for the person you are. Proof look at all the beautiful woman of all races that have it made. {we think} and they wind up killing their self. But there would not be a problem with me if A.A,women became the standard beauty. If I love you, it because of the person you are. who would want to live their lives with a beautiful hateful person just because of their looks ? it happened in the last few years. you see, GL is mortal, and therefore, has to pass the ring and the responsibilities to the next candidate. in truth, there are thousands of members of the GL corps... most of which aren't even human!!
