Western digital has software free to download to help you with this problem. Have you formatted the drive? The last time I had this problem I got so frustrated I took the drive out of the enclosure and installed it as a slave and formatted it.

how old is your computer?
the new drives are for usb 2
your system may be usb 1

now we need to do some research here which port have you pluged it into

do you have a remove usb devices icon on your task bar right bottom
take the drive out... restart your system
plug in the usb drive,, it should say found new hardware
could be that the usb port is not working. go into the device manager and see if you have any question marks against any usb devices if you have then your missing some drivers

Check the drive letters. Do you have anything that is already installed on a d, e or f drive? Like a pda or another cd drive or external hard drive or mapped drive? Try changing the letter of that drive and I'll bet the usb drive shows up.

This is a common problem. Use disk management, under administrative tools - in control panel, then find that drive listed. Right click it, and "assign drive letter". That will do it.
