First impressions are just like judging a book by it's cover. That is why the statement was created in the first place.

Are they fair? Yes and no.

There are plenty of times I've judged someone on first impression and been wrong. There are more times that first impressions are correct.

Everyone evaluates everyone they meet on first impressions. Its just the way we are. The best advice is to keep your first impression in reserve. You've got the impression but don't judge that person or write them off until you have all the information or have been with them for a while. Learn what makes them tick. Why they are the way they are. Then judge whether they are someone you want to associate with.

We all judge very quickly. Keep an open mind for a while and make a decision when you are more educated on the individual in question.

Yes it is but it is much more subtle. We cannot edny that first impressions are important but they are irreversible. In my business first impressions mean alot but if I get the feeling that I haven't made a good one I find ways to change their minds. Sometimes it is as easy as apologizing for not making the best first impression.

Yes. and that is slightly different from judging a book by its cover. You wouldn't know even if its a book unless you trust your first impressions!!Judging implies making ethical/value conclusions but first impression does not necessarily entail drawing such conclusions.

It's a natural human tendency. That's why they make the labels of consumer products really attractive. It's fair if you've prepared to make an impression. It's unfair if you're caught flat footed.
