Politics is basically your government in action. There are many different political parties that are involved in politics. A political party is a group of individuals who represent a part of the population. the two major parties are republicans and democrats. basically, a republican believes in giving money to businesses with the money trickling down to the people, and democrats believe that money should go to the people and trickle up to the businesses. there are other many aspects involved but there are the basics. just Google political parties for a more in depth of what their views are.

"Conservatives" stem from the idea of a government conserving its power which comes from a limited rule over the people and conserving money.

"Liberal" comes from people thinking about the affects of progressive (more liberal) ideas for the future. This includes such far fetched (at the time) ideas like Civil Rights, independence from Britain and Social welfare programs during the Depression.

Unfortunately Conservative of today are not what their party was created for. They spend money frivilously and impose their will over others and have become a large government, rather than the minimal government they espouse.

Liberals and conservatives need each other to keep the country in check. Rather than one side overdoing it with their ideas the opposing party offers their opinion so it doesn't become an extremist government. Neither facism nor pacifism will ever rule.

What is Politics? Do you have about ten years? Lets try to establish the basics for now.
Ok, Conservatives are Republicans and Liberals are Democrats. By saying that, I've made both groups angry at me. You see, there are varying degrees of Republican-ness and Democrat-ness. This vast gray area is the realm of the Moderate. Believe it or not, both parties agree on most things. They disagree on how to accomplish these things.
Conservatives, as the name implies, have beliefs centering on religion, traditional family values, and private enterprise. Their foreign policy is based on negotiating from a position of strength (ie a strong, technologically superior military) and show a willingness to use this strength.
Democrats (I'm not a democrat, so somebody help me) have a more social minded philosophy. They are concerned with the poor and want to see all the underprivileged get their piece of the pie on the taxpayer's dollar. Republicans want this too, but they would rather private organizations carry most of the load with government subsidies. Democratic foreign policy stresses negotiation to solve problems (sometimes way past the time for action, in my opinion). Democrats want a strong military too, but not like Republicans do. Military funding routinely gets the axe in Democratic administrations. The money usually gets put in various social programs.
To sum all this up in Star Trek terms: Republicans are Riker and Democrats are Picard. Picard wants to talk to the bad guys while Riker can't wait to blow them up.

Here's a good way to look at it. In "The Federal Courts, Politics, and the Rule of Law," by John C. Hughes (published 1995), it says:

"In the contemporary political context, those who fear conformity have tended to describe themselves as liberal and have tended to applaud judicial 'protection' of human rights. Those who fear diversity have tended to call themselves conservatives and have been appalled by judicial 'usurpation' of the majority's discretion to form the kind of community it finds most conducive to its own happiness. The former tends to approve of the expansive theories of constitutional interpretation, while the latter tends to prefer the restrained theories of judicial review. These alignments are neither perfect nor inevitable, but the debate has surely been shrill."

Politics is a term used to describe the debate, discussion, and other actions taken in governing a country. There are other definitions of politics, describing it as decision making in a group setting, it does not necessarily have to describe government.

Conservatives: “Political” conservatives in the United States usually support free-market economic principles and low taxes, and distrust federal, as opposed to state and local, government power. Conservatives favor Private Business rather than Government Regulation. They believe that money is better used by the private individual, that people should keep what they earn. Conservatives see Wealth Redistribution as a generally, and remarkably bad idea.

Liberals:“Political” liberals tend to favor greater federal power to remedy perceived social inequities; “cultural” liberals tend to support a woman’s right to choose to kill their unborn child, as well as feminism, homosexual rights. Liberals distrust business and would rather see government regulation of it. They believe it is the Government's responsibility to take care of people in need and generally accept wealth redistribution. "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need" is seen as an acceptable policy.

Politics are two parties believing that only they know what's good for the country, and anyone who disagrees with them is wrong.
