I've noticed when I use a gift card, it always seems like a faster transaction with the cashier rather than paying in cash (i.e. waiting for your change), using a credit/debit card (i.e. waiting for approval, still pretty fast) or witing a check (i.e. Can I see some I.D.?)

The problem with gift cards is they are not univiersal, where as cash is, the credit card/check/check card thing is more universal than gift cards, but still not as universal as money. With cash, yes change can be a real pain in the butt, especially if the cashear has about the same IQ as that item you just bought, and infact sometimes the item may seem smarter, but thats the thing with cash and carry, it all has to ballance out. Approval and IDing are still the safest way to go though, its very unlikely that you can get away with much when it comes to approvals and IDs because most credit card companies and buisnesses limit your purches amount without showing an ID, which makes it much harder to rip you off, where as with cash and gift cards, since these items are not bound to one person inparticulare they both can pass through 30 different hands before being used, very unsafe if you are around theifs and pickpockets.

Thank you for asking this question. I have been troubled by this dilemma. For a high school graduation, I think that $100 is a bit much. I was considering somewhere between $25 and $50. It is complicated when there are many nieces and nephews in the next few years, to set a very high amount and then have to match this every time.

Gift cards are the best! cash is always nice but if you know someone wants one from a certain store, hell yeah.

I think they are better than cash because it requires more effort and you have to know the places that the person likes to shop or eat.
