Hay is by far the WORST bedding for guinea pigs. It is not absorbant at all, leaving it to mold. It is also stiff and has been known to cause eye injuries, or break the skin and cause an abscess. Newspaper is also not absorbant and will need to be changed out a few times a day. Also, if the dyes are not soy-based, they will be harmful if ingested. Safe guinea pig bedding is kiln-dried pine (regular pine has harmful aromatic oils), aspen, paper based bedding such as carefresh/yesterday's news/cell-sorb, or polar fleece with puppy pads, towels or incotinance pads underneath. See the forum at www.guineapigcages.com for more information.

Good toys are hidey houses, paper bags, toilet paper rolls cut lengthwise and filled with hay and cozies.

I used newspaper for my guinea pigs' bedding. Guinea pigs need to chew to wear their teeth down, so cardboard, wood chips, and wooden blocks make good toys. Some woods may be toxic to guinea pigs, so ask a vet or look on the Internet to see which wood not to use. Pine shavings also work well as bedding. For homemade toys, wood blocks cut in shapes are fun. Many types of veggies are healthy and fun for them to eat. They like sweet potato, corn, broccoli, carrots, and some fruits like apples and pears. Stay away from citrus. Alfalfa hay is fun for them, as they can make a nest and eat the hay. Alfalfa pellets (big fat ones) or cubes are fun for them to chew on, and it keeps their teeth at a controllable length. They love greens, though try to get leafy lettuce, and not iceberg.

**PINE bedding also has phenols that many guinea pigs are alergic to. its best to stick with Aspen bedding. That's what I use for mine. All rodents need hard chew toys. Rodents teeth grow nonstop and there are serious health risks in not allowing them to file them. I use Ecotrition for my guineas food, and give them each a cup of fruits and vegetables daily (lettuce, carrots, grapes, cucumbers). I also crush a vitamin C tablet and sprinkle it over the fruits/veggies. (Vitamin C tabs are a MUST, do NOT buy the vitamin C water drops, as vitC dissolves easily in water) Also, just like they always have to have food and water available, they also need timothy hay available at all times, just have a couple piles lying around.

Hay is by far the best bedding for guinea pigs. I used to use wood shavings for them, but they really love the hay. You can get a bale of it for much cheaper than wood shavings if there are farms in the area (look for timothy hay or orchard grass). We usually line the bottom of the cage with newspaper, then put hay on top of it.

You might consider getting a little house for your guinea pig to hide in. Mine (I have four currently) really enjoy these plastic igloos. They have never been very interested in other toys.
