He's never really been "part of the family" and he's had so many of his 'bipolar' moments that it's lessened my respect and hope in him. Now, after years of 'warnings' and 'threats' to leave, I think he's actualy going to go. It's been going on since I was so young so I feel so heartless for him at times, but he's not a bad person...
He's acting unusually nice but still has his moments.

Is he trying to suck-up before he takes off? Or, is he trying to make it up and be a better person?

He may just be trying to let you know that you're not the problem, that he's the one with the problem and he's leaving because of himself, not because of his children.

And don't feel heartless. You're just tired of the conflict and the emotional rollercoaster. Totally understandable.

No matter what he may be going through being bipolar he is probably trying to let you know he does care and maybe even try to make up for all those times he was not around. Enjoy the moment for now for what it is--a moment-- just don't get your hopes up that he will stay like this...they usually don't..his attention may come in waves.

I empathize with your dilemma, it's very understandable to experience these feelings. However, I encourage you not to be discouraged. No matter how difficult things get he will always be your father. My father died when I was young, so I encourage you to connect in whatever ways you can to your dad.
