Why is so much thought given to the Mayan Calender, when Nostradamus predicted?

another 1000 years before the end of earth. Could it be that 2012 is closer.

i think Nostradamus is not given credibility because he is VERY vague in his predicitons - the Mayan's on the other hand - whilst nto being seen as "correct" are seen with some curiosity as they based their calender on comnpletely DIFFERENT numbers and astronomical events. its interesting to note that the South American's have often had calenders that are just as accurate as todays calenders.... interesting

Maybe because the mayan's had less technology at the time and wasn't supported by different cultures and countrys. Nostradamus lived in Europe and had more influence from others.....Maybe they are both influenced by the same thing..

maybe it is because the Mayans and Hopi and many of the native tribes are known for few but accurate Prophesies.

2012, not the end of the world, just then end of a cycle, it is seen as a new beginning in Myan beliefs. everything ran in cycles to them.

The Mayan prediction is less about the end of the world, and more about the end of a World Age.

Because most of Nostradamus' answers were generic, or written in riddle, leaving there more than one possible interpretation. Mayans were more dead on, and more exact with their calendar, architecture, astronomy, etc.
