A black man in my class wrote how he went to eat a salad and noticed "black pennies" in it. I want to know what are black pennies and what does it mean to a person of color, my teacher didn't know the answer to this. I know its derogratory, but I wish to know the meaning behind it, in case it ever happens to someone else. I thought I heard of this term before, but don't know what it means.

The only two possibilities that occur to me are black pepper and black olives. However I don't find any reference on the internet to black pennies as a colloquial term for anything.

Well I've never heard of anything like this before, but I would image I would take it for what it was. A penny is the lowest of all currency, and if it was colored black, well... there you have it. I'm black and I find it quite funny actually. If your serving ME in a restaurant and still throwing the race card...I'd leave those black pennies as your tip..see who eats now! No offense to you..kinda got caught up in the moment..lol
