I play by ear, too. I've tried to teach people how, but it doesn't ever work. I play T Sax. It's kida a God given gift. Not sayin u don't have it, but there's no way to really tell. I suggest you get a piano or a keyboard and mess with the keys trying to play a song. If you get it pretty fast, try harder songs. If you get really complex, like where u r playin' chords, u probably have the gift. Good Luck and Merry Christmas.

Try reading biographies of these people you idolize (especially the guy with the big neck). You will most definitely find inspiration in their writings, if they have any writings.

Hate to say it, but learning to play like that takes practice. Improvisation (tonal improvisation that is) requires a vast knowledge of the modes (aeolian, locrian, dorian, etc.). If you are a serious musician, you should find a teacher to guide you.

Good luck. PRACTICE!

I personally know three very good sax players, one alto sax and the other two play tenor sax. It really does just take practice, but even with all that practice mistakes can still happen. No one is perfect, but you can try to be. Sorry, no magic answer. Just learn it and practice it.

10 years tops to accomplish it with 15 minutes of playing 6 days a week.

Get a professional instructor and take lessons.
Listen to all the songs you want to play so they are in your head.
Play speed drills with scales, then with riffs every day.

Discipline to persevere when it gets tedious.
Creativity to make the tedious challenging and fun.

If you truly wish to be THAT good, and you honestly believe you can be, then there are just three things you have to do:

1) Practice

2) Practice

3) PRACTICE!

And then, practice some more.

The first 2 words are your clue. "I WANT". You'll do it if you want it. Good luck. Don't listen to negative people. OK?
