What could be the outcomes of a DWI accident that caused major damage to a utility pole, a fuel line, the street, and a peice of private property. There was a fire for about 1.5 hours. I believe everything had to be replaced, from the pole to the wires. This is a first offence for an ex-military guy. The lawyer and the arresting officer both have a good feeling about being able to drop the DWI to a DUI, but that is all I know because I care not to discuss this with my friend...but I am worried about him and wondering what could be in store. There was a lot of damage and utility workers worked for atleast a week to fix the area. The truck he was driving was fully insured...but it was not in his name. No one was injured.

insurance is not going to cover a criminal act, it will be very expensive for your friend, they can basically charge whatever they want, i know that street signs are well over $100, imagine what a utility pole will cost to install, there will also be fines, if your friend can pay and gets a lawyer, he will probably not go to jail, but will be riding the bus for awhile

The answer to this question is.... It depends entirely on the laws of the state in which the incident occurred. for instance, in CA we don't differentiate between DWI and DUI.... First time DUI in CA... a couple years ago anyway, was $1,357 in fines, 5 years probation (mandated, no getting out of it!) 2 days in jail, and 12 weeks "Drinking Driver Program." Add to that the actual cost to repair the damage done, including wages of the city/state workers, costs to maintain the equipment, etc... and increased insurance rates.
Too bad your friend made such an unwise choice. It's a very costly mistake to make. In many more ways than just the financial.

This man made a costly mistake.Who is going to pay for the damages to state property and private property?Surely not the state and the citizien of the property. If the offender has money? He could clean up his bad situation. If not, seriouse probation and fines will most likely be his future for this situation.Possibly no jail time.

Where do I begin?
Truck fully insured. Good. Not insured in your name? You just lost a friend. Possible major insurance increase.
No one physically injured is obviously good. Conviction for DUI will show up for awhile when you get your own insurance, apply for certain jobs etc. Possible civil suits from civilians affected by accident damage. Loss for anything relying on power that was lost

First offense, 6 months suspension of driver's license, probation, alcohol diversion program.
The person who owns the truck and the other people who have damaged property may sue him for damages. The utility company may also sue for damages.
