My wife has been a nurse for 12 years. I'm not sure what you are asking but I can tell you that in her career (newborn nursary) she works 12 hour shifts, she makes about $38 an hour, she works two nights and then has four off, works two, five off, etc... She uses virtually NONE of the math, physiology, biology, or psychology that she learned in nursing school, but loves it. Not a great amount of stress, GREAT pay, GREAT benefits, GREAT hours, and there is ALWAYS other hospitals courting her to come and work for them.
Good luck.
Don't pay any attention to Jessicadad (the first contributor) it is clear she would be too stupid to ever make it as a nurse and she doesn't have a clue what she is even talking about. Apparantly she is confusing nurses with orderlies--typical of a moron like her.

People die. You may get attached to them but they can die no matter how good of care you give. No matter how often you or little you work, they will still try and get you to come in for more shifts. I work at a nursing home and I hate when the State Board of Health comes in for their survey. It's nerve wracking when they are standing by you as you do your med pass. Even if you don't do anything wrong it's still intimidating. You can get burnt out by nursing too. But it can also be a very rewarding job when you see people rehabilitated and able to go back home. And most of the patients are sweethearts. I personally have a hard time with dementia patients that are stubborn and think you are out to get them. The shifts can be long, you can be swamped. If something happens like someone falls or codes all your duties get pushed back and leave you scrambling to finish.

My sister is a nurse. They stand for long hours, need really good shoes. Their subordinates take off all the time, leaving them with more work. She has hurt her back lifting people, separated her sternum, etc. When she worked in a nursing home, she'd come home and cry when one of the old folks died, she got attached to them. Its real all right.

You make really good money and you can find a job ANYWHERE.
And I do mean anywhere!! You want to move to some little town in the middle of nowhere? You can find a job. There will always be clinics, hospitals or a nursing home nearby.
The nurses that I have known absolutely love their career choice. It affords them such freedom with scheduling.

It depends on where you work.If you think your going to get out of wiping butts or feeding people or getting them up its not true. Also your going to work short staffed.Your also going to have to put up with alot of bulls**t whether from staff, patients, family, doctors, etc. You have to be able to handle death. And able to handle stress and able to multitask. But really there are good things about it too.Honestly if I had known what it was really like I wouldnt have done it.

You get to clean up all the nasty, disease-ridden messes, and the Doctor gets the money. But...you get to take out your frustrations on screaming kids by jabbing them with big needles.
