My friend says he stopped smoking, but i don't believe him because he still smells like smoke. or it could just be me. Also, he's really acting differently; his clothes are more emo and he hangs out with somking senior, though there was a dramatic change in personality when he said he stopped. And he goes to his smoking friend's house almost every day after school (his mom works full-time) How can I tell for sure without asking? And what can I do about it and convince him to stop? He already claimed to have stopped. He's a freshman.

He has a reason to lie about it too. My friend who we think he likes (even though hes dating) literally chased him around the school when she found out. and I don't approve of it either.

Or am I being to paraniod?

You have to decide what you don't like about him being a smoker. If it's that he smells like smoke, then tell him you don't want to hang out with him when he smells like smoke. If you're worried about his health, then tell him that or keep it to yourself and let him live with his consequences.

As far as signs that someone is smoking:

(1) Hair and fabric retain a faint smoky smell even after one washing.

(2) Fingertips can be yellow and smell smoky for days after a final cigarette.

(3) Smoke can be tasted in the mucous lining of the mouth if you kiss (since you're just friends, I don't know if you French kiss him) ;-)

(4) Ashtrays, carrying lighters, hanging out with friends who smoke, cigarette cartons in the garbage, yellow sputum when coughing, unproductive hacking cough, etc.

if he still smells like it, and hangs out with people who also smoke then he probably does. A way to solve this problem is to bring it to the attention of a higher authority, your mother/father so that they can tell his parents.

Why is it up to you and the round-the-school-chasing friend to make him do anything?
If you're that concerned about his health, talk to his parents.
