I have been running a small computer sales and service company for about 5 years. I have built well many "custom" machines and allot of which were designed primarily for gaming. I warrant my work, but so far have not had to repair anything I've built. Depending on just how big and powerful a machine you want, the cost can be a little bit more thin if you just buy something like a Dell or an HP off of the shelf, but the machine will run faster and be much more stable. It will not have all of the prioritized poop that off the shelf units come with. If you would like to attempt to build your own system, there are many sites on the web that have good instructions, just Google it. Advantages of a home or custom built system. You get to choose all of the components, such as hard drive size, cpu type and speed, motherboard type and peripherals, type and speed of the video card (very important if you intend to do any gaming). The list just goes on and on. The ability to match the ram speed to the system frontside buss can greatly improve the communication between the ram and the cpu, allowing much faster data processing. Just a note: The first computer that I bought many years ago was a name brand, and it only lasted about a year before it died, from then on I have hand built all of my systems and have been much the happier for it.
